GETTING PUBLISHED: CHANGING THE ODDSwith RENNI BROWNESaturday, December 1st 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. How do you find a literary agent? How do you tell whether or not an agent is any good? Is an agent who charges a reading fee legitimate? Assuming you find out an agent is good, how do you get one to read your work? Should you let an agent have an exclusive, or is it okay to send your work to several agents at once? If you give one an exclusive, how long should you be willing to wait before getting a response? Should you submit electronically or in hard copy? Literary agents are just one of the topics that will be covered in this one-day workshop. Browne is the coauthor (with Writer’s Digest contributing editor Dave King) of Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, which has been a best-selling title for writers since the publication of its first edition in 1992. Formerly senior editor for William Morrow, she dropped out of mainstream publishing in 1978 and founded The Editorial Department, now the oldest and largest book-editing company in the country, in 1980. In addition to literary agents, workshop topics include: the direct approach (publishers who can be approached without an agent), the two-line query letter, dazzling dialogue, self-editing tips, the power of a seductive opening, secret resources for writers on and offline, avoiding scams, the ins and outs of hiring an editor, how to get feedback without paying for it, self-publishing, and much more. Registration is in advance only via PayPal or by mail. The cost is $90, or $85 for Workshop members. There will be a lunch break at noon – brown-bagging is fine.
