Hard Times Writing Contest

• Write about a difficult experience in your life, how you overcame this obstacle, and how you were changed by it. Winning stories will be chosen for originality and creative writing style.

• Stories should be previously unpublished, and should not exceed 4,000 words (double-spaced, 12 point font). Multiple entries are accepted. Your name, address, phone and title of work should appear on a cover sheet.

• Enclose a self-addressed, self-sealing stamped envelope for critique and list of winners, and the reading fee of $20 (or $15 for Workshop members) per entry.

• Make check or money order payable to Writers' Workshop, and send to: Hard Times Contest, 387 Beaucatcher Road, Asheville, N.C.  28805.

2nd Annual Meet the Authors Writing Contest

FIRST PRIZE: $500, or an all-expenses-paid trip to meet the authors, Sept. 9-10
SECOND PRIZE: $300, or meet the authors.  Accommodation provided.
THIRD PRIZE: $200, or meet the authors.

Contest winners are eligible for a free trip to New York to personally meet National Book Award-winning authors E.L. Doctorow and Peter Matthiessen. The winners will also receive autographed books by the authors - or, may opt for a combined $1,000 in cash prizes instead of the trip. In addition, ten Honorable Mentions will receive recognition.
